South Asian Heritage Month (SAHM) is an annual event organised by the South Asian Heritage Trust to bring a
greater awareness of South Asian Heritage in the UK. South Asian countries include Afghanistan, Bangladesh,
Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. SAHM month aims to elevate awareness of the histories
and identities of the South Asian diaspora in the UK.
The theme for 2026 is “Unity in Diversity” which is defined as:
· Celebrating our differences
· Holding space without shrinking
· Learning with curiosity
· Standing together
· Joyful resilience
The mission is to deepen people’s understanding of the rich and diverse contributions of South Asian
communities to society, promote intercultural dialogue, and encourage greater social cohesion among
communities. The Trust aims to grow a deeper and more inclusive understanding of history and heritage,
promote social harmony and cohesion, and contribute to a more equitable and inclusive society for all.
South Asian Heritage Trust started in 2018 and was co-founded by Jasvir Singh CBE and Dr Binita Kane. The
Trust seeks to elevate the prominence of British South Asian history and heritage through education, arts,
culture, celebration and commemoration.
Our friend and colleague Rita Puri has prepared a list of resources in collaboration with SAHM, which we wanted to share with you to download in full here.
Many are relevant to you as educators, coaches, or both.
Wishing you a wonderful South Asian Heritage Month and a July filled with wonder.
