Lincolnshire Teaching and Learning Centre, UK

In April 2016 Gill was commissioned by Wellspring Academy Trust to lead a county wide Pupil referral unit spread over six buildings as Executive Principal. The setting had gone into special measures category in February 2015. Gill had to ensure initially that students were safe and were being taught well. After six months of leadership, the November HMI monitoring visit report stated:

The culture across the centre has changed considerably over the past two terms and is now typified by a growing sense of accountability from the vast majority of staff and a greater focus on teaching and learning. Senior leaders continue to place pupils’ care and well-being at the core of all they do. The recent appointment of a new pastoral team reflects their commitment to improving their systems for safeguarding pupils and their attendance further still.
The warm and positive relationships between staff and pupils remain a strength of the centre. The interim executive principal sets the tone for this and ensures that pupils’ needs are central to every aspect of planning and organisation.

At the end of her time at the setting, 55% of students were working at above age related expectations, local authority advisors deemed the unit to be out of category and the final SEF judgements were R.I with elements of ‘Good’ and ‘Outstanding’.

Gill successfully led the setting through Academy conversion on April 1st 2017 and handed the Executive Principalship over to Dave Whitaker Executive Principal of Springwell Learning Community, Barnsley.

During her time at the setting Gill had the privilege of working with National Leaders in Education for Special and SEMH contexts. Her practice has been shaped by the direct experience of working with outstanding schools and practitioners.
